Crusin' Illinois @ Decatur Street Art Exhibit

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS TO ALL OF OUR "STREET ART" EXHIBITORS!!! The Decatur Area Arts Council really appreciates everyone's effort to make the "Street Art" exhibit a rousing success. Thank you all for sharing your talents. We had over 1200 visitors to the gallery in September. Your art brought a lot of smiles and enjoyment to your audience.
If you'd like to check out the videos filmed by Cruisin' Illinois, you can go to http://cruisinillinoistv.com/players/clips/vid_86.shtml.
And, the story they did on Deborah Mahan who was demonstrating at the opening is at http://cruisinillinoistv.com/players/clips/vid_90.shtml.
I've attached a few pictures of the exhibit for those who weren't able to attend.

SHARKULA

About Thig
Thig is the famous mad hustling genius from the streets of Chicago. Recording under the names Thigahmahjiggee and Sharkula, he's been a fixture in the neighborhoods and on public transit, selling his wares and preaching the hip-hop gospel. But what distinguishes Thig from the pack is ability to translate what he does across social and artistic divides. In addition to the excellent straight up hip-hop work he's done, he's been involved in wide range of genre-crossing projects, including collaborations with Mark DeNardo and features on albums by acts like Pigface and Bagman.

Keath Sodapop

It is 5:00 A.M. Monday morning and the city is beginning to stir. The air remains still and quiet except for the faint outline of a shadowy figure feverously working to complete his masterpiece under the approaching sun. For the masses the rising sun is a symbol of a new beginning and a movement towards the routine but, for Keath Sodapop it represents the unwanted recognition of the public.
Who Keath Sodapop truly is can only be seen through the use of a nom de plume. However, under close insightful investigation it can be understood that such a surname can reveal more about an individual than true identity could ever hope to project. Keath’s work on display to the public acts a window and creates an omnipresent atmosphere for the viewer to look and observe through. Since the viewer is unable to experience Keath’s work in its true environment this piece is intended to serve as narrative making explicit the true nature of a poet and muralist hidden within a subculture.

A LEGEND Has passed. RIP SACE IRAK

I might be late to hear this but the story hits the heart. Please read up on this guy! Super inspirational and always a crowd favorite. I have enjoyed and jocked SACE's work ever since the first spotting. Regardless from my birthplace in CHICAGO I never seen much in person, but felt the wrath. Dash Snow was an awesome artist and from what's said and heard " He was a man of mystery " and will be missed. Perfect story written by a PERFECT ARTIST! Rest IN PEACE

Chasing Dash Snow
At 25, he is a growing downtown legend, a graffiti writer turned artist with a beautiful face and a De Menil pedigree, elusive even to the two friends who created his myth. What happens if he’s caught?
The artist Dash Snow rammed a screwdriver into his buzzer the other day. He has no phone. He doesn’t use e-mail. So now, if you want to speak to him, you have to go by his apartment on Bowery and yell up. Lorax-like, he won’t come to the window to let you see that he sees you: He has a periscope he puts up so he can check you out first.
Partly, it comes from his graffiti days, this elusiveness, the recent adolescence the 25-year-old Snow spent tagging the city and dodging the police. “He’s pretty paranoid about lots of things in general, and some of it was dished out to him, but others he’s created himself,” says Snow’s friend, the 27-year-old artist Dan Colen.
